What the fuck is wrong with front pagers
Seriously defending refusing to hang a soldiers dress coat? And doing so with the following:
wars in the middle east are not about American freedoms
he volunteered, and is being paid
if you want to respect him, give him better mental health services
Excuse me, I need to go punch a hippie.

I defended the flight attendant. Why does he get special treatment? For doing his job?
The flight attendant was doing his or her job too.
I respect soldiers but seriously, this is such a non story a stupid issue. Poor baby didn't get his jacket hung. If I'm a buisinessman riding in coach and ask for my jacket to be hung I'd be told no and everyone would call me a dick if I complained, but this soldier should be defended for doing the same exact thing?

Went and read the story and comments out of curiosity.
I want to scream.
I understand it's policy, and if he was in anything but his uniform, I'd say he could deal with it. But being uniform changes it things IMO.
I did see a couple very logical arguments FOR the soldier, which is good.

seriously I'm sorry I don't bow before them, as my tax dollars do pay for their health ins, college degrees and salary. I appreciate what they do but they were not part of a draft. They chose to be there. If war comes here and we need to fight for freedom I'll fight alongside. Until then stop making a big deal about special treatment. That's all...the majority of us respect and appreciate their life decisions but it doesn't make them above the rules. Go punch a hippie if that makes you feel better. But that's fucking lame.

Do you never fly?
Because every time I do, uniformed military personnel always get special treatment.

Here I am. Punch me. I guess I am guilty for stirring the shit up. It comes down to us Europeans not getting the degree of militarism shared by our fellow trans-atlantics. We are sharing our opinion and are respecting yours. Guess I will just get off your lawn next time something like this appears on Jalopnik. No one wants this to end like the wave that came over from Jezebel, right?
Edit: Have a white Volvo as sign of my peacefulness.

Just because they do doesn't mean they should.

I think they deserve some respect for being willing to do the job, but I find it odd that soldiers get such an extreme level of honor. Firefighters risk their lives every day, police officers do as well and yet we seem just as quick to make fun of police and criticize them as we do to praise soldiers.
Ultimately the point I'm making is expecting special treatment is rude no matter who you are. If he asked politely to hang his jacket and was politely told no that should have been the end of it. It sounds like he was politely told no then overreacted and now he's being defended even though he's just an asshole.

Most of the articles I saw about it seem to indicate that he was told no and it was the other passengers that raised a stink. In accordance with policy, the soldier did not accept any first class seats that were volunteered to him, since servicemen and women are not allowed to fly first class, even if it's free. Ends up being a PR nightmare when other passengers bitch about "the waste of tax money" even though the seat was given away.
That "just doing his job" shit may apply to some professions but you can't paint everybody with the same brush.
That woman teaching inner city kids in a blighted urban area? Just doing her job.
Fireman fighting brush fires for weeks on end in California? Doing his job.
Lady earning social worker pay to counsel battered women? No extra sacrifice there. People are lining up around the block for that opportunity.
And so forth. Utter garbage to use the "doing their job" line. Did they volunteer for it? Yeah, but if it wasn't for altruism we'd never have people to do the jobs that require more than 9-5 clockpunching in a safe environment.
Not every soldier deserves a statue, and some don't even deserve a discount card for the movies. But the fact remains that they are doing a job that a lot of us don't want to do, and it requires a long term commitment that keeps them away from loved ones for extended periods of time. That is a hell of a sacrifice.
Allowing them to board early, get to the overhead compartment room first, and maybe hang up a jacket or get a full can of soda during drink service is not that big a deal to the airline in the grand scheme of things.
And before you bring in the police/fire/EMT thing, know that uniformed officers get special treatment in places as well.
